Arctic Monkeys top NME poll
[source: NME.com] NME staff have voted Arctic Monkey's Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not as the best album of 2006.
Frontman Alex Turner admitted he was surprised by the album's success, despite the hype that surrounded it before its release.
"We'd been up and down playing those songs and everyone had gone pretty barmy, but I didn't think they were going to buy a CD," he explained.
"I just thought they were out and having a laugh. I didn't think it meant we were ultimately going to make this big album. When we finished we were so proud we'd made a record, it seemed secondary that it was a good one."

The B-52s work with New Order producer
[source: NME.com] The B-52s are working with New Order producer Steve Osbourne on their first new album since 1992.
In a posting on the band's website, guitarist Keith Strickland discussed the lengthy lay-off:
"We took a short break, which ended up lasting several years as each of us went our individual ways, musically… I considered doing a solo album, but in a moment of clarity I decided that I would rather put my energy into a new B-52s album."
The band began working on the album in 2003 and decided to record with Steve Osbourne.
"[He] produced New Order's Get Ready, which I love," Stickland said. "When we were discussing producers for the album, I suggested Steve."
Strickland also explained the new album would contain a theme, although he would not reveal what it was.
"About halfway through these sessions we noticed a theme developing," he said. "However, I don't want to spoil the experience for you by giving it away. You've got to hear it to believe it."
A release date for the album, which the band has described as "rock'n'roll-glam-electro-soul", has yet to be announced.

Madonna's last-ditch effort to save marriage
Madonna is heading to the Maldives this week, reportedly to undergo a last-ditch effort to save her marriage to British film director Guy Ritchie.
A "friend" of Ritchie's told UK newspaper The News Of The World the couple's marriage was in a "sad" state.
"It's make or break. They even argued over where to go, so things aren't good. Guy has let slip their marriage is hanging by a thread."
The couple, who've been married for six years and have a six-year-old son (as well as adopted toddler David and Madonna's ten-year-old daughter Lourdes), have been dogged by break-up rumours for months.
Meanwhile, Mads has been attacked by animal rights group People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA) after she was photographed wearing a fur coat in London last week.
"Wearing a coat made of dozens of animals who were strangled or anally electrocuted got Madonna the attention she so desperately craves," PETA spokesperson Karen Chisholm said. "But it also brought painful deaths to small, gentle animals who died for her vanity."
