New York Mayor covers Bruce Springsteen
[source: NME.com] New York mayor Michael Bloomberg performed a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" at his annual staff Christmas party at Gracie Mansion last week.
In response to persistent rumours that he will run for President of the United States, the New York Times reports Bloomberg took to the stage – backed by senior members of staff playing inflatable musical instruments – wearing a T-shirt, jeans, mullet wig and bandana.
Changing the lyrics, the mayor sung: "I know I said this job I'd keep, but [Deputy Mayor Kevin] Sheekey said don't be cheap. Only cost you half a billion, 'cause folks like us, baby, we were born to run."
The mayor performed the song under the name Mike Bloomsteen And The Bullpen Band.

Mariah Carey in porn battle
[source: NME.com] Mariah Carey has threatened to take legal action against porn star Mary Carey to prevent her from trademarking her name.
Singer Carey believes fans could get confused between the two if Mary Carey's trademark application is successful.
The porn star said she's ready to battle the singer all the way.
"I've been Mary Carey for a long time. It's kind of funny because I'm a porn star and I've been being myself for a long time. I think she's being silly."
Mary Carey's lawyer, David Beitchman, said he thought the singer stood little chance of winning a case.
"My first thought was, 'Does Mariah Carey realise what her lawyer is comparing her to and are they seriously concerned?'," he told Reuters. "Do they seriously think the fans are going to be confused?"

Prince to play Super Bowl show
[source: NME.com] Prince will play the half-time show at the Super Bowl in February.
The Rolling Stones played this year's event, although they were asked to censor several of their lyrics. It's believed this move followed Janet Jackson's infamous nipple-bearing performance at the 2004 Super Bowl, which saw broadcaster CBS fined a record AU$638,000.
The Super Bowl is one of the most watched television events in America and past half-time shows have featured the likes of U2 and Paul McCartney.

Courtney Love's legal victories
Former Hole frontwoman and occasional actress Courtney Love has escaped her legal woes, with a Los Angeles Superior Court dismissing three pending charges.
Yesterday, Judge Rand Rubin dropped Love's misdemeanour assault charge and two drug possession cases, declaring the singer had successfully completed drug rehabilitation.
Love, who was accompanied by her manager and lawyer, cried upon hearing the verdict.
"Thank you for not taking me into custody," she said. "Thank you for giving me an opportunity. You've been a good, fair judge. Sorry for crying."
Having now been sober for 16 months, Love says she's relieved her legal troubles are at last behind her.
"I'm so happy and excited. I'm relieved," she said. "I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders."

Jet stage special LA show
It was almost four years ago that Melbourne rockers Jet played their first US show at the small, yet noteworthy, Spaceland venue in Los Angeles. With millions of sales of their debut, Get Born, under their belt, Jet were back at the 260-person capacity venue once again on Sunday night.
Performing an intimate, semi-acoustic show in support of second LP Shine On, the band surprised the crowd with a few special guests. Jet were joined onstage by soul singers the Waters Sisters, who provide back-up on Shine On (and, as drummer Chris Cester pointed out, also sang on Michael Jackson's hit LP, Thriller).
They were followed by former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash (who helped the band cover The Rolling Stones' "Salt Of The Earth") and Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson (who sang Jet's "Eleanor" plus The Ronettes' "Be My Baby").
Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones also took to the stage (for The Faces' "Miss Judy's Farm"), with the night ending in a huge all-star finalé.

Foxy Brown summoned to court
US rapper Foxy Brown made an unexpected appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court yesterday after being accused of violating her probation. Brown had previously been sentenced to three years' probation, having pled guilty to misdemeanour assault back in August 2006 following a fight in a nail salon two years ago.
Lawyer Shawnda Weinberg said Brown was "flouting the court-ordered conditions of her probation", failing to attend anger management classes, submit to drug tests or keep appointments.
Brown (whose real name is Inga Marchand) wasn't allowed to speak during her appearance and told reporters outside the courthouse she was being hounded.
"I have never violated probation," she declared. "This is happening to me because I'm Foxy Brown."

Special Michael Franti show announced
Already heading to Australia for The Falls Festival, musician/activist Michael Franti has announced he'll perform an intimate show in Lorne's historic picture theatre on Tuesday January 2.
The night will include a screening of Franti's recent documentary, I know I'm Not Alone, a film capturing the musician's travels through the war zones of Iraq, Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.
The doco has been described by System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian as "powerful, honest and touching", while Anthony Minghella (the director of films The English Patient and Cold Mountain) urges people to "watch this film and then insist Michael Franti becomes President of the United States".
Tickets cost $50 (plus booking fees) and go on sale Wednesday December 13 from Ticketek and other outlets.
