Stars reflect on Joni Mitchell
[source: NME.com] Björk, Sufjan Stevens and Elvis Costello are among artists who offer reflections on Joni Mitchell and the experience of covering her songs on a new website.
A Tribute To Joni Mitchell features Björk's comments on the struggles of female artists in a "rock white male world" and Stevens' musings on media mogul David Geffen, as well as thoughts from Annie Lennox and Emmylou Harris.
These artists, and others, including Prince, have contributed to A Tribute To Joni Mitchell, due out on Tuesday April 24.
The website also features streaming versions of the covers, alongside Mitchell's originals.
"As I grow older," Björk remarked in her posting, "I am forced to admit a very, very sad truth (something I promised I would never do): we are living in a rock white male world and because of this Joni is being ignored while someone like Bob Dylan, for instance, has become a saint."
Meanwhile, Sufjan Stevens said assembling a cover of "Free Man In Paris" required "more than a few musical somersaults".
"Who can possibly surmount Joni's rollercoaster vocal lines with all those odd syntaxes and off-beat pronunciations?"
These and other musings can be found at www.atributetojonimitchell.com.

Appeal in James Brown case rejected
[source: NME.com] The US Supreme Court have denied the appeal of a sexual harassment verdict filed against James Brown.
Brown's former publicist, Jacque Hollander, accused the legendary soul singer of raping her at gunpoint in 1988, and sought AU$130 million in damages. Hollander alleged the incident caused her to develop Grave's Disease, a thyroid condition.
The lawsuit was initially dismissed in 2005 when a federal judge ruled Hollander had waited too long to file the case. An appeals court upheld the decision last year while the Supreme Court again dismissed the case earlier this week (Monday April 2).
Brown died on Monday December 25, 2006, aged 73.

Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé take home kids' choice awards
[source: NME.com] Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé took home the big individual prizes at Saturday's Kids' Choice Awards held in Los Angeles, and have the green slime stains to prove it.
The show, hosted by American cable television network Nickelodeon, is known for covering its guests in green slime, a trademark of the network for more than 20 years.
Gwen Stefani's manager dubbed the awards "one of the most important shows on the planet", as it usually attracts more than six million viewers and garners 40 million votes from the all-important under 18 demographic.
The event was held at UCLA and featured a performance by Stefani, as well as appearances by top-tier celebrities like Orlando Bloom, Jack Black, Nicole Kidman and Mandy Moore. By the end of the night, many had been covered in green slime.
Timberlake, who hosted the event wearing protective goggles, also wielded a slime-spewing hose with which he attacked his victims.
Black Eyed Peas took home the prize for Favourite Music Group, beating out competition from Fall Out Boy, Nickelback and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

John Butler breaks more chart records
He's already the most successful Australian independent artist of all time, and now John Butler - the man behind current radio hit "Funky Tonight" - has topped the charts once again.
New LP Grand National has rocketed into the ARIA charts at number one after selling more than three times the usual number of albums required for the top spot. And considering Butler releases his albums on his own label, Jarrah Records, the US-born roots singer is earning a healthy percentage of sales.
The John Butler Trio will take to stages across the country this weekend, with slots at the East Coast Blues & Roots festival and The Great Escape event over Easter. A national tour will be announced soon.

Want to see The Spice Girls? That'll be $1.2m, thanks...
With reunion rumours dogging former UK girl-group The Spice Girls, a British newspaper has accused Sporty, Baby, Scary, Posh and Ginger of holding out on fans purely for more money.
UK daily The Sunday Express claimed the girls are in talks with promoters for a Take That-style comeback tour, but won't settle for anything less than AU$1.2 million per show.
"The difference is that Take That weren't just in it for the money," a source told the newspaper over the weekend. "They worked hard, wrote a new album and made their show a great spectacle. No one is convinced The Spice Girls can still do that. The money they want will leave nothing for the promoters. Nobody wants to take them on."
Teenage fans worldwide cried when the group disbanded in 2000.

Bono to star in Hollywood film
After receiving a knighthood, Bono now has his sights set on Hollywood.
The U2 frontman has reportedly signed on for a role in Across The Universe, a film directed by Julie Taymor (who's responsible for the movie Frida and the Broadway version of The Lion King) and laced with Beatles references.
Written by the team behind Irish hit The Commitments, the movie is apparently "an intense love story set in the 1960s", and follows two lovers - Jude and Lucy - from Liverpool to Vietnam via Detroit, as they explore the "counter-culture". Bono will play Dr Robert, while British comedian Eddie Izzard will portray Mr Kite. Both characters act as guides for the star-crossed lovers.
