R.E.M. preview new songs in Dublin
[source: NME.com] R.E.M. previewed 11 new songs for a sold-out crowd in Dublin on Sunday July 1.
The band are currently working on the follow-up to 2004's Around The Sun and played new songs during a performance they dubbed a "working rehearsal". They also played classic tracks including "Wolves, Lower", "Sitting Still", "These Days", "Heron House", "Second Guessing", and "Electrolite".
According to the band's website, they are "taking advantage of a day off in Dublin today" before resuming their "working rehearsals" with another show in the city tomorrow.
R.E.M. will reportedly continue working on their new album with producer Jacknife Lee (known for his work with Bloc Party and Snow Patrol) in a Dublin studio.

Timbaland to quit music?
[source: NME.com] Timbaland has reportedly said he is ready to quit the music industry and name a successor.
The super-producer, who has masterminded hits by Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado (and released a solo album earlier this year), said in a recent interview he is "about to throw in the towel" because he is bored with the music industry.
"Music is boring right now. I'm too innovative for the world," he told Gigwise.
"I've been doing it so long [but] I'm about to throw in the towel. I'm about to de-crown myself and pass it over to one of the up-and-coming producers under me. They won't be able to be me – there's only one Timbaland – but there's a certain sound that I try to teach."
Timbaland has also been working with Duran Duran on their forthcoming album.

Robert Plant plays down Led Zeppelin rumours
[source: NME.com] Led Zeppelin have denied they will reunite for a one-off gig later this year.
There have been rumours the band would reform for a tribute concert for Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, with John Bonham's son, Jason, taking over the drumming duties. Bonham died after choking on his own vomit following a drinking session in 1980.
While he didn't completely rule out a reunion, singer Robert Plant played down speculation.
"If there was one [a reunion], then there wouldn't be enough doctors to support it!" he told reporters at the Rockwave Festival in Greece.
Led Zeppelin have only performed a handful of concerts since they split in 1980, including a disastrous performance at 1985's Live Aid, which they refused to allow on the DVD release.

Fergie signs product placement deal
[source: NME.com] Black Eyed Peas star Fergie has signed a new deal to promote products in her songs.
The singer inked a AU$4.7 million deal with American clothing brand Candie's that will see her not just namecheck the brand but write songs that specifically promote the products. However, the chain has no say in when Fergie will release the songs, or their exact content.
An executive at her label, Interscope, told The Sunday Times that Fergie's deal was good business.
"With record sales in decline, you must find novel ways to make money out of music. The trick is to make the brand part of the song so it slips down easily rather than choking the fan."

Marilyn Manson to direct film
US shock rocker Marilyn Manson is preparing to take his unique vision to the big screen.
Manson, who recently released his tenth album, Eat Me, Drink Me, has announced he'll make his cinematic directorial debut with Phantasmagoria: The Visions Of Lewis Carroll.
The film will be shot in France and Manson says he'll employ a magician to help create the picture's special effects rather than relying on CGI.
"I just want to be unconventional by being traditional," Manson said. "I think by being traditional, sometimes like a Hitchcock, it's almost modern, because people are so used to seeing special effects."
While there are no leads in place yet, "The Beautiful People" rocker says he plans on "extorting" pal Johnny Depp to encourage him to take part in the project.
Currently on tour in Europe, Manson was recently banned from entering a local cathedral in Cologne, Germany.
"Unfortunately they didn't let me in," he revealed. "Probably because I was wearing lipstick."
