Billy Corgan disses American girls
[source: NME.com] Smashing Pumpkins closed the Main Stage at the Carling Weekend: Reading festival last night (Sunday 26 August).
Taking to the stage at 10pm, the Chicago band made their way through 90 minutes of material both old and new. The full moon was amplified against a cloudless sky as the band tore through favourites like "Tonight, Tonight", "1979" and "Today".
Midway through the set, stage cameras panned the crowd, which included a scantily clad young woman.
"There's something about a girl who's willing to take her top off so quickly," Corgan commented.
"American girls are sl*ts too," he added. "Isn't it great to be alternative? You can say all those things."
Corgan then launched into a solo acoustic version of "1979".
"We're very humbled to be back on this stage," Corgan concluded at the end of the show. "Miracles can happen."

Amy Winehouse says husband "saved her"
Amy Winehouse and husband Blake Fielder-Civil hit the headlines again over the weekend when the pair were snapped bloody and bruised after an argument in a London hotel.
In a series of text messages with American celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, Winehouse denied her husband attacked her.
"Blake is the best man in the world. We would never ever harm each other," she wrote. "Take back what you said on the blog. I thought you was my girl. I was cutting myself after he found me in our room about to do drugs with a call girl and he rightly said I wasn't good enough for him. I lost it and he saved my life."
Winehouse sent four separate texts to Perez, who has since amended his entry. It's just the latest scandal for 23-year-old Winehouse, who is rumoured to be battling drug and alcohol problems.

Toni Braxton battling breast cancer
American soul singer Toni Braxton – who shot to fame with the single "Unbreak My Heart" and is currently performing in a Las Vegas stage spectacular – is reportedly suffering from breast cancer.
The mother of two hasn't confirmed the reports, but media coverage in the US claim Braxton is secretly undergoing radiation treatment and chemotherapy.
"Toni is a fighter," a source allegedly told the National Enquirer. "She initially thought the worst, but doctors assured her the prognosis for her breast cancer is excellent."
If true, it'll be the second serious medical problem for the Grammy winner; in 2002 she was diagnosed with the heart condition pericarditis after passing out following a show.

Are Britney's pets okay?
You can't help but feel some pity for troubled pop singer Britney Spears: first there was the breakdown of her marriage to Kevin Federline and then came the weird head-shaving incident, rehab and a custody battle.
Now the "Oops I Did It Again" star is being investigated by American animal charity the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) after her dog was spotted wearing a cast.
"We have received various complaints throughout the day," SPCA's president, Madeline Bernstein, said on Saturday 25 August.
"Some said that Britney's Yorkie dog was injured and had a cast on and some said the dog had a broken leg and was not treated."
Today Spears' publicist has shrugged off the report, saying the pooch was fine.
