Pete Doherty sentenced: singer due in court tomorrow
[source: NME.com] Pete Doherty is due in court at 10am (BST) on Tuesday August 7.
The Babyshambles singer will attend West London Magistrates Court to be sentenced for a drugs charge after pleading guilty to possessing class A drugs. The charges relate from Saturday May 5 when police stopped the singer in Kensington High Street.
Having pleaded guilty to possessing quantities of crack, heroin, cannabis and ketamine, as well as two driving offences, Doherty is also facing an additional charge of failing to appear in court without reasonable excuse after he turned up late to the initial hearing.
Since pleading guilty, Doherty has undergone a drug rehabilitation programme (in Harrogate, Yorkshire) at the court's request.
The singer was warned at his last appearance that failure to comply with the court's instructions could leave him facing a prison sentence.

Jay-Z denies Def Jam split
[source: NME.com] Jay-Z has denied rumours he is to leave the Def Jam label for Columbia Records.
But the rapper did admit he understood why the rumours began.
"My three-year contract is up soon… I guess Rick Rubin is there [at Columbia Records] and we've got a relationship.
"But I haven't talked to Rick since he started at Columbia. I called him to say congratulations. But I've learned to leave the possibility open. Sometimes rumours spark real things."
The rapper told Billboard he was not planning to make a new album following last year's "comeback" record, Kingdom Come.

Keith Richards: "I did snort my dad's ashes"
[source: NME.com] Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has confirmed he did snort his father's ashes.
Richards originally claimed he was misquoted, after his publicists attempted to quash the story. But the guitarist, who last weekend claimed he would live to the age of 150, revealed that although he did snort his father, he did not mix his ashes with cocaine, as his previous quote implied.
"The cocaine bit was rubbish," he said. "I said I chopped him up like cocaine, not with cocaine.
"I pulled the lid off [my father's urn] and out comes a bit of dad on the dining room table," Richards continued. "I'm going, 'I can't use the brush and dustpan for this'.
"What I found out is that ingesting your ancestors is a very respectable way of… you know, he went down a treat."

George Harrison was "shell-shocked" by The Beatles, says wife
Beatles guitarist and iconic songwriter George Harrison was "shell-shocked" by the group's meteoric fame, according to his widow, Olivia Trinidad Arias.
Arias recently gave an intimate interview about life with the singer, who died back in December 2001 after suffering from cancer. Arias was Harrison's second wife, following his 1966 marriage to model Patti Boyd.
"He was shell-shocked from the whole Beatle experience. Literally shell-shocked," Arias said.
"He hated loud noises. And imagine it all day, every day, for five or six years: people were screaming at you when you opened your door, jumping on the hood of your car, looking in your window. And then there were the death threats. He wanted to be far away. And he wanted sunshine. George was always on a quest to get as far away as he could… I had the feeling he travelled the planet simply to look for solitude."

Gwen Stefani says motherhood "comes naturally"
Gwen Stefani, currently in Australia for a series of shows as part of her The Sweet Escape tour, has admitted she was terrified about becoming a mother.
The 37-year-old gave birth to son Kingston last year with husband Gavin Rossdale.
"My biggest fears about motherhood were, 'How would I fit him into my life?' and, 'Would I be too self-obsessed to be able to care about him enough?'.
"I have a really extraordinary life and I obviously have a lot of passion about the things that I do. So I didn't know if I could be selfless enough. But obviously I can. It's the most amazing thing that has happened to me."
It seems Stefani has Kingston's best interested in mind; while in Sydney recently, she took him to the home of tennis ace Lleyton Hewitt and Bec Cartwright, to play with their daughter, Mia.

Pearl Jam rock Lollapalooza and attack George Bush
Alt-grunge rockers Pearl Jam have never been fans of the American government, but US President George Bush got a full serve when the band played at the recent Lollapalooza festival in Chicago.
Their performance on Sunday August 5 – the only show the band will play in the States this year – saw frontman Eddie Vedder let loose on Bush. Vedder also criticised oil giant BP for plans to dump oil into nearby Lake Michigan.
"Think of it as a very pretty girlfriend who never brushes her teeth," Vedder told the crowd. "Don't kiss them."
Vedder then went on to introduce Iraq War veteran Thomas Young, who spoke to the crowd and urged them to vote Bush out of office. Wrapping things up with a version of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall", Vedder changed the lyrics to: "George Bush, leave those kids alone!"

Amy Winehouse: I'll never cancel again
"Rehab" soul singer Amy Winehouse says she'll "never cancel again", after receiving a "rollicking" from her dad.
The pint-sized British starlet has cancelled and postponed several shows over the last few weeks, prompting speculation about her health and possible over-intoxication.
"Yes I've been bad," she admitted to UK media outlet ITN after she stood up fans at festivals in Liverpool and Scotland recently.
"My dad sat me down the other day and gave me a talking to about missing gigs. I got into trouble but I am not going to do that anymore."
Meanwhile, the singer says that, despite media reports, she isn't set to record the new James Bond movie theme.
"I would love to, but that came from someone saying that [Back To Black track] 'Love Is A Losing Game' sounds like a James Bond song. I think that's a great compliment, but that was it."

New Zealand go cold on Ice Cube?
US rapper Ice Cube's planned visit to New Zealand may be in trouble, with the hip-hop veteran accused of bringing a "gangster message" to the country's youth.
The rapper is set to perform at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau City on Wednesday August 22 but mayoral candidate Len Brown reckons Cube's presence will help incite a rise in "gangster-style" violence in the area.
"Ice Cube brings a gangster message to our community via his gangster rap," Jackson said. "This message promotes gangs, gang violence and drugs. We don't want this in our homes. We don't want it on our streets."
Show promoter Camilla Anderson said it's all a political ruse and claimed the "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" singer has "shed most of his gangster imagery".

Brandy may escape jail
R&B star Brandy could escape prosecution on charges of misdemeanour vehicular manslaughter following a fatal 2006 car accident.
Los Angeles authorities are reportedly "split" over the decision whether or not to force Brandy to take the stand while they await technical data to reveal how fast the star was driving when her vehicle hit 38-year-old Awatef Aboudihaj's Toyota Corolla on the San Diego Freeway on December 30, killing the other motorist.
If the case does go to court and Brandy is convicted, she faces a possible one-year prison sentence and a fine.

Spice Girls head to Toronto
British super-group Spice Girls won't play in Baghdad after all.
The pop five-piece, who've reformed for an upcoming global tour, were offering fans the chance to choose one final concert destination on their trek, which kicks off in Vancouver in December.
At one stage, thanks to millions of votes, it looked like the "Spice Up Your Life" starlets would be heading to the war-torn capital of Iraq. Paris, Alice Springs, Manchester, Rio de Janeiro and Chicago were also strong contenders, but Canadian city Toronto won the race.
"We are delighted to be going to Toronto," the group said. "We have such incredible fans there and we are amazed at such a positive reaction."
So far, more than three million fans have registered online to buy tickets to the group's shows. Spice Girls hit Australia in January 2008.
