[source: NME.com] Gloria Carter, mother of Jay-Z, was yesterday honoured by New York City Council for her "outstanding contributions to the community".
Carter received the proclamation for her work with the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund, which helps disadvantaged youths achieve college educations. The charity also has a mentoring programme.
Additionally, Carter went to Houston in 2005 to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina who fled their homes in New Orleans.
The ceremony took place at City Hall's Council Chambers yesterday. Jay-Z was present to see his mother receive the honour and told reporters he was "very proud".

Fight breaks out at Ben Folds gig
[source: NME.com] A fight broke out this week at a Boston Pops gig where Ben Folds was making an appearance.
The show at Boston's Symphony Hall on Wednesday May 9 saw two men struggling in the balcony – one with his shirt pulled off – as several people stood around them.
Witnesses say they heard a scream from the balcony and the sound of chairs falling, then a second scream as the fight escalated. Conductor Keith Lockhart halted the performance.
Boston police spokesperson David Estrada said police officers on security detail at the hall escorted the men off the property and no charges were filed.

Rilo Kiley return with new record
[source: NME.com] Rilo Kiley have announced they are returning with new album Under The Blacklight on Monday August 20.
The band's fourth album is the follow-up to 2005's More Adventurous. Each song on the album focuses on a different character and includes the tracks "Money Maker" and "Breaking Up". The record was produced by Jason Lader and was recorded at Sunset Studios in Los Angeles.
The Blacklight marks the return of the band following individual solo projects. Jenny Lewis released Rabbit Fur Coat in 2006, while Blake Sennett recorded Sun, Sun, Sun with his band The Elected. Sennett also contributed to Bright Eyes' last album Casadanga.

Ryan Adams has fan in Stephen King
[source: NME.com] Ryan Adams has an unlikely fan in horror author Stephen King.
In a statement written by King about Adams' new album Easy Tiger, the horror author praised the singer-songwriter.
"I won't say Adams is the best North American singer songwriter since Neil Young… but I won't say he isn't either," King said. "What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger."
"I mentioned [to him] how prolific he was, aware that I might be touching a sore point. After all, there are plenty of critics who seem to think that's a bad thing. Adams, however, just laughs."

Diana Memorial concert heats up
The mammoth UK concert held in honour of the late Princess Of Wales, Diana Spencer, has just got bigger.
Joining the likes of Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart, Take That, Lily Allen, Duran Duran and Joss Stone onstage will be US hip-hop mogul P. Diddy, as well as English lady-killer Sir Tom Jones. Canadian singer Nelly Furtado has also agreed to appear, as will Supertramp – apparently one of Di's favourite bands – and English TV's Pop Idol winner Will Young.
The concert takes place at London's Wembley Stadium on Sunday July 1, which would have been Di's 46th birthday. The event is being staged to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the death of the "People's Princess".

Queen guitarist heads back to university
He's a member of one of Britain's most successful bands, but for Brian May – guitarist with Queen – learning new skills is an ongoing challenge.
May has returned to university (studying at London's Imperial College) to finish an astronomy degree he began in the 70s, before the band even formed.
The 59-year-old rocker says the PhD has "completely taken over" his life.
"To do my thesis justice, everything has been put on hold," May told British newspaper The Daily Express.
"The intensity has been increasing in the past couple of months to the point where there was simply no time for being a dad, a husband or even a musician, which I have been for the past 35 years since I left my PhD papers in a big trunk at home."

John Howard quizzed on Snoop's no-entry
Prime Minister John Howard was quizzed by school students during a visit to Canberra yesterday over why US rapper Snoop Dogg was refused entry to the country.
Snoop was due to appear as a guest host at the Australian MTV Video Awards a fortnight ago. However, due to recent drugs and gun charges in the US, the rapper was denied entry by Australian immigration.
Howard's brief response to the student's enquiry? Snoop is, he said, a "man of poor character".

Britney collaborator gives insight into new LP
Britney Spears collaborator Nate "Danja" Hills has revealed the singer hasn't let any of her personal life into her new LP.
Hills – a pal of producer Timbaland – talked to US music station VH1 about the pop diva's forthcoming album.
"There was no, 'I need to let it all out'," Hills said. "She said she deals with that in another way."
Having written eight songs together, Hills says Spears wants to make an album that's fun, has a hip-hop flavour and is danceable. The subject matter, he said, is up-tempo and private.
"It's fun, it's basic and there's nothing wrong with that. It's about feeling good, celebrating womanhood. And if you don't dance to it, I really don't know what you're listening to."
Expect the first single in September.

Powderfinger to release "Black Tears"
Brisbane five-piece Powderfinger have told youth broadcaster Triple J they will release the controversial "Black Tears", having re-recorded a section of the vocals to avoid any potential legal action.
The track was inspired by a current manslaughter case on Palm Island, where a police officer, Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley, is facing charges for the death in custody of Mulrunji Doomadgee.
Fanning wrote the song's lyrics but was recently forced to change them to avoid any potential prejudicial influence in the upcoming trial.
"What we wanted to do was ensure that basically there was no reason whatsoever we could be associated with this guy receiving an unfair trial because he is entitled to a fair trial," Fanning told interviewer Robbie Buck. "Obviously that's the cornerstone of our system."
