John Lennon's spectacles up for auction
[source: NME.com] A pair of spectacles owned by John Lennon have gone up for auction.
The gold-rimmed glasses, which the late Beatle wore during the band’s Japanese tour in 1966, are attracting bids of more than AU $1million at auction site 991.com.
The spectacles are accompanied by a note from the band’s translator at the time, Junishi Yore.
During their tour, The Beatles were forced to remain virtual prisoners in their Tokyo hotel after they received death threats from religious groups angry at the band’s decision to play at the sacred Budokan site.
The only people with them were photographer Bob Whitaker and Yore, who Lennon befriended on the trip. When The Beatles left Tokyo, Lennon gave him his prized glasses as a token of thanks for looking after the band.
The spectacles remained with Yore until the Beatle’s death in 1980 when, in accordance with Japanese folklore, he pushed out the lenses as a lament to Lennon.
Bidding will continue until Tuesday July 31.

Dave Matthews lends support to returning troops
US singer-songwriter Dave Matthews is calling on US Congress to do more for traumatised American troops returning home from fighting in the world's war zones.
“It just struck me as a profound injustice that someone who had given so much of themselves and clearly showed such a quality of personality that the gratitude we’re showing them was basically a dishonourable discharge,” Matthew said.
The singer has launched a petition on his website – which has gathered more than 23,000 names already – urging the US government to make changes to the military’s mental health system. A recent task force discovered that more than one third of US troops suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and that some personnel have been misdiagnosed as suffering from personality disorders by mistake.
“It’s about how we treat people who have given, essentially, their lives,” Matthews said. "[They've] put their lives in the hands of our country.”

Britney: not with the Manny
US pop singer Britney Spears has been forced to deny reports she’s hooked up with bodyguard Damon "The Manny" Shippen.
Despite being photographed accompanying Spears and her two sons – Sean Preston and Jayden James – to Bel Air Presbyterian Church on the weekend, and later snapped playing with the tots in Spears’ backyard pool, it’s all work and no play according to the singer.
“He really wants to focus on his job: taking care of the kids and of her,” a source told US mag People last week. Meanwhile, friends of Shippen claim he’s “tickled” by the false reports.

Silverchair reschedule American shows
Following an embarrassing performance on the Jay Leno show last week, Aussie trio Silverchair have been forced to postpone a series of US dates until November, with lead singer Daniel Johns suffering from severe laryngitis.
“Daniel caught the common viral infection of the throat earlier this week, after flying Sydney-Los Angeles-Toronto-New York-Los Angeles in just four days,” a statement released by the band’s management said.
It severely impeded his vocal performance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, a broadcast that, unfortunately, was seen by 3.5 million viewers.

System Of A Down frontman to release solo LP
System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian is putting the final mixing touches on his debut solo LP, Elect The Dead.
Due to be released in the spring on the singer’s own Serjical Strike label, Tankian says he had no idea he was making a record when he began mucking around last year in his home studio in Los Angeles.
“There are political songs, funny songs, love songs, songs about painful experiences, vanity, and the environment,” the singer said. “It has a deep melancholy that runs from the personal to the global, with a glimmer of hope in the solidarity of spirit.”
SOAD fans will have to wait for a band reunion, however. Tankian said he’ll be working on the new tunes for the foreseeable future.

Madge to make Malawi film?
Fresh from the set of Filth & Wisdom, where she's trying her hand at film direction, Madonna is creating a new documentary about Malawi, the country from where she adopted her son, David Banda, in 2006.
According to the singer’s publicist, Madonna was so inspired by her visit last October that she became determined to draw attention to the problems faced by the country’s residents, among the poorest in the world.
“She’s been working on it for a year,” Liz Rosenberg revealed. “It’s very intense. And profoundly sad – not for the faint of heart. She did an amazing job, I must say.”
Madonna is also working on her next LP and has already teamed with Justin Timberlake in the studio.

Damon Albarn condemns Aussie Government
Damon Albarn has criticised the Australian government for their decision to stop US rapper Snoop Dogg from entering the country.
Back in April, lawmakers put the stop on a visit by the rapper, stating his convictions for dugs and firearms were a good reason to keep him out.
Now, according to Albarn, the former Blur frontman and current Gorillaz star, the legal brouhaha will only have made Snoop more popular.
“Australia is just making his franchise even stronger by banning him,” Albarn reckons. “So they’re doing the total opposite of what they’re trying to do. He can’t lose.”
In 2006, Britain’s Home Office also banned Snoop from entering their country, following a disturbance at Heathrow Airport in London.
