Portishead star slams Mark Ronson
[source: NME.com] Portishead's Geoff Barrow has launched a scathing attack on super-producer Mark Ronson, who has worked with the likes of Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Kasabian.
In a posting on Portishead's MySpace page, Barrow wrote: "I think it takes amazing talent to turn decent songs into sh*t supermarket muzak.
"I also heard Mark Ronson's remixing Bob Dylan… some music industry t*t thinks it needs remixing. You would think he [Ronson] would have the respect to say no to the job, but obviously not. What's the bet on Bob Marley and Nirvana next?"
Barrow went on to reveal that Portishead plan to mix their new album next week.

Open call planned for Notorious B.I.G. movie
[source: NME.com] Producers of the Notorious B.I.G. biopic have said they will find the star of the movie through an open casting call.
The movie, simply called Notorious, will include professional and amateur actors in its casting process, which is due to begin this Friday.
The film's producers told Associated Press that video auditions can be submitted beginning Sunday August 12 to www.foxsearchlight.com/notorious or www.biggiecasting.com.
Biggie's former manager, Wayne Barrow, said finding a professional actor to play the rapper, whose real name was Christopher Wallace, was next to impossible.
"As it relates to the individual Christopher Wallace – his looks, his stature, what he represented, the swagger, the sensibility of the man – all those elements are very difficult to find, no matter where you go. In the typical Hollywood world, no one came to mind outside of Forest Whitaker who could capture that essence genuinely."
The producers did not approach the Oscar-winning actor, however, because at 46 he is too old to play the rapper, who was murdered in 1997, aged just 24.
The movie is expected to begin production later this year.

Britney's in trouble again
[source: NME.com] Britney Spears allegedly ran into a parked car and then drove away on Wednesday when she was being followed by a swarm of paparazzi in California.
When Spears realised she had hit the car, she inspected only her own Mercedes convertible for damage, but ignored the parked vehicle.
The owner of the other car, Kim Robard-Rifkin, said Spears has not attempted to contact her regarding the damage.
"It was like my car didn't matter to her, my inconvenience didn't matter to her."
Rifkin was surprised Spears had not been in touch, considering the whole episode was documented online and on TV.
"What kind of person wouldn't realise this would be on TV and she had to be responsible and contact me?"
Rifkin says she just wants her car fixed and filed a police report today.

Pearl Jam's Lollapalooza performance censored?
[source: NME.com] Pearl Jam have spoken out against the apparent censoring of their performance at Lollapalooza last weekend by AT&T on its webcast of the event.
The telecommunications giant, which sponsored Lollapalooza, muted Eddie Vedder singing "George Bush, leave this world alone" and "George Bush, find yourself another home" to the tune of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall".
When Pearl Jam learned of the apparent censorship on AT&T's webcast, the band issued a statement.
"This troubles us as artists but also as citizens concerned with the issue of censorship and the increasingly consolidated control of the media.
"AT&T's actions strike at the heart of the public's concerns over the power corporations have when it comes to determining what the public sees and hears through communications media."
AT&T issued a statement in response, attributing the censorship to "a mistake by a webcast vendor".
"We have policies in place with respect to editing excessive profanity, but AT&T does not censor performances. We very much regret this happened in the first place."
Meanwhile, Pearl Jam said they intend to stream their performance in its entirety from their website.
"In the future, we will work even harder to ensure that our live broadcasts or webcasts are free from arbitrary edits."

Kanye says no thanks to debate
Yesterday we brought you news of the publicity war between two of America's most famous rappers, Kanye West and 50 Cent. With the pair set to release new albums on the same day next month – Tuesday September 11 – 50 Cent has challenged his musical rival to a televised on-air debate.
Kanye, however, has declined the offer.
"What am I going to debate about?" the "Gold Digger" singer asked.
"I'm going to go in the studio and make music. When I heard that thing about the debate, I thought that was the stupidest thing. When my album drops and 50's album drops, you're gonna get a lot of good music at the same time."

"It's something we want to begin to create this year, a family of many colours," the 35-year-old pop star told reporters in Puerto Rico.

J Lo blocks tell-all book
Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez has successful stopped a tell-all memoir by her former husband – 31-year-old Ojani Noa – from being published.
The couple were briefly married in 1997, with Noa signing a confidentiality agreement just five months ago.
Since then, he's been shopping a book about his life with the "Love Don't Cost A Thing" singer to US publishers, which Lopez's attorneys claimed was in breach of the deal.
Yesterday, arbitrator Richard Chernick agreed and issued a permanent injunction which stops Noa from "criticising, denigrating, casting in a negative light or otherwise disparaging" Lopez in any manner in the future. The star was awarded AU$638,000 in damages. Lopez is currently married to singer Marc Anthony.
