Yoko Ono's chauffeur seeks bail
[Source: NME.com] Yoko Ono's jailed driver made his fourth attempt to post bail on Tuesday January 9.
Koral Karsan claimed the AU$2.58 million he requested from Ono was not blackmail money but payment for years of sexual harassment and abuse.
To support the claim, his lawyer, Robert Gottlieb, filed a letter that purportedly proved he had threatened to humiliate Ono unless she gave him the money.
In the letter, dated December 2006, Karsan portrays himself as an abused employee seeking justice. He tells Ono he had decided to pursue a sexual harassment lawsuit against her. He then demands Ono gives him AU$2.58 million or risks having him release material that "will astound the world". The information includes statements about The Beatles, the US and UK governments and recordings of son Sean Lennon.
In the letter, Karsan threatens: "Depending on the outcome of our dealings, I will not only write about these recordings but will also distribute them to European broadcasting stations throughout the future."
Gottlieb said Ono had accused Karsan of grand larceny to head off his sexual harassment claim. The lawyer explained the letter showed only that Karsan was willing to forego filing a sexual harassment lawsuit in exchange for compensation.
Assistant District Attorney Anne Schwartz, however, objected to his release on bail. She said the case against him was strong and could land him in jail for 15 years.
Gottlieb claims Ono pressured Karsan to commit "immoral and illegal acts". However, Ono spokesman Elliot Mintz said this was an "obfuscation" of "a clear, obvious, transparent shakedown".
As previously reported, Karsan was arrested on Wednesday December 13 on a charge of attempted grand larceny after Ono complained to authorities.
The bail application will be reviewed again today (January 11) by Supreme Court Justice Daniel FitzGerald in New York.

Jimmy Eat World close to finishing new album
[Source: NME.com] Jimmy Eat World are close to completing their first album in three years.
The band recorded the follow-up to 2004's Futures at their rehearsal space in Tempe, Arizona, and have been working with famed producer and Garbage member Butch Vig.
"The record is quite eclectic," Vig told Billboard. "There are three or four songs that sound like classic Jimmy Eat World, with angular, razor-sharp guitars. There are a couple that are a lot more dreamy, and some that are very groovy. Anybody who is a fan will like this record."
Tracks on the as-yet-untitled album, due for a mid-2007 release, reportedly include "Big Casino", "Be Sensible" and "Firefight".

US rapper 50 Cent has turned his hand to condoms after successful forays into film, clothing, books and mineral water.
Now Fiddy is set to combat the spread of HIV, according to an interview with the New York Post.
"The kids become immune when you constantly beat them over the head -– read a book, read a book," he said of safe sex education. "We have to be a little more creative about it. As opposed to being part of a safe-sex campaign, I'm going to make condoms and donate a part of the proceeds to HIV awareness."

George Michael pleads not guilty
Former Wham! singer George Michael pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges of being unfit to drive and possessing marijuana.
The 43-year-old singer didn't appear at the court hearing, which saw him charged under his real name, George Panayiotou.
Michael's attorney, Keima Payton, argued blood samples taken from the singer on the night of his arrest, Saturday September 30, 2006, weren't legal. Payton then called for case be thrown out. Arguments for the issue are set to take place on Wednesday March 7.
The singer was arrested after police found him passed out in his car at a North London intersection.
