The Who frontman attacks Live Earth gigs
[source: NME.com] The Who frontman Roger Daltrey has slammed the upcoming Live Earth concerts.
The concerts being organised by former US vice-president Al Gore will take place in cities across the globe on Saturday July 7 and feature the likes of Madonna and Foo Fighters.
However, Daltrey believes the shows are undermining their own aims of raising awareness about climate change.
"The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert," he told The Sun. "I can't believe it. Let's burn even more fuel. We have problems with global warming, but the questions and the answers are so huge I don't know what a rock concert is ever going to do to help."
However, The Who frontman – who claimed the gigs are pointless as most of the planet are already aware of global warming issues – did offer a novel solution to the world's environmental woes.
"My answer is to burn all the oil as quick as possible and then the politicians will have to find a solution," he declared.
The worldwide shows have also being criticised by Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof, however Daltrey was also critical of that event, even though his band played the London leg.
"What did we really achieve at Live 8? We got loads of platitudes and no action. Who were we kidding?" he asked. "At least with [original event] Live Aid, Bob Geldof was willing to work the trenches and they did save a lot of lives. We could see what we achieved at the end of it."

"Hip-hop leaves me cold. But there are some people out there who think it's the meaning of life," he told Rolling Stone. "I don't wanna be yelled at; I wanna be sung to."
"I never really understood why someone would want to have some gangster from LA poking his fingers in your face," he added. "I mean, the rhythms are boring – they're all done on computers."

Syd Barrett leaves £1.7m in will
[source: NME.com] Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett has left nearly £1.7million (AU$4 m) in his will.
Many believed the songwriter, who died last year, was poor because of the modest, reclusive lifestyle he led in Cambridge after quitting the band in 1968. But Barrett left brother Alan £425,000 ($1m) and his other siblings – Rosemary Breen, Ruth Brown and Donald Barrett – £275,000 ($658,000) each, according to documents that were made public this week.
Breen, who cared for the singer towards the end of his life, also received the proceeds from the sale of his Cambridge house – £310,000 ($742,000) – and the £119,000 ($285,000) made from auctioning his possessions.
The legal papers also indicated Barrett's mental state had declined in recent years. Brother Alan authorised the will under the Mental Health Act, The Daily Mail reported.
Barrett was a founding member and main songwriter of Pink Floyd before he left the band. He then released two solo albums in 1970.
However, he suffered psychological problems believed to be linked to experimentation with LSD and eventually retreated from public view, living the rest of his life in Cambridge.
He died last year, aged 60, from complications arising from diabetes.

Marilyn Manson says marriage left him "a featherless bird"
With new LP Eat Me, Drink Me due for release next month, US shock rocker Marilyn Manson says he was devastated after his marriage to burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese broke down.
"I was completely destroyed. I had no soul left," the 38-year-old rocker told Spin. "I define myself as a person, a human, an artist, as someone who makes things – writing, painting, music – and I couldn't do anything." Manson married in November 2005 after five years with Von Teese, who filed for divorce last December.
"She said she had tolerated the lifestyle because she hoped I would change and threatened to leave if I didn't," Manson said. "I was sleeping on the couch in my own home. I was no longer supposed to be a rock star. I was someone who had to be apologised for. I wasn't prepared to be alone. I came out of this naked, a featherless bird."
Manson is now dating 19-year-old actress Evan Rachel Wood.

George Michael says he may leave London to escape the media spotlight following his latest run-in with the law.

In a revealing interview, Michael admitted he had a dependency on prescription drugs, believes marijuana to be much less harmful than alcohol and blames his downfall on the reaction to his mother's death a decade ago.
