Prince snubs Michael Jackson
[source: NME.com] Prince has reportedly snubbed Michael Jackson's offer to join him on tour.
The gloved one is said to have asked the purple one to open for him at a series of concerts designed to help revitalise his career. But Prince declined the offer, claiming he already had plans for a tour of his own later in the year.
The alleged rejection comes on the heels of a snub from veteran producer Quincy Jones, who turned down the chance to work with Jackson on his forthcoming album.
Meanwhile, Jacko has just bought Famous Music LLC from Viacom. It means he now owns tracks like Eminem's "Without Me" and "The Real Slim Shady", as well as rights to songs by Shakira, Beck and Bjork.
"This is a milestone event for Sony/ATV Music Publishing," Jackson said in a statement. "The diverse collection of songs in this catalogue range from timeless classics to contemporary hits, and I am pleased to add the acquisition of Famous Music to Sony/ATV."

Oasis founder turns back on his own label
[source: NME.com] Alan McGee, the man who first discovered Oasis, has decided to turn his back on traditional record labels, including his own Poptones imprint.
Instead, the Creation Records founder says he will concentrate on acting as an adviser for bands.
McGee, who also discovered The Jesus And Mary Chain and The Libertines, currently manages Dirty Pretty Things and The Charlatans. He claimed it is no longer feasible for record labels to profit from new bands.
Speaking to BBC6 Music, he added: "The best advice I could give to any young band is to do it yourself. Of course, the major record companies will come in and sign two or three new bands a year and probably always will, but who'll own the major record companies? Probably a hedge fund."

The Who credit Rolling Stones as their inspiration
[source: NME.com] Pete Townshend of The Who has credited The Rolling Stones as the inspiration behind the band's classic 1966 single, "Substitute".
Townshend has posted excerpts from his upcoming autobiography, Who He?, on his own blog (petetownshend-whohe.blogspot.com) and revealed how he became "inspired" after Stones manager Andrew Oldham played him a test pressing of "19th Nervous Breakdown".
"My song began as a homage to Smokey Robinson, inspired by The Rolling Stones," he revealed.
He then said a collaboration with Mick Jagger was not out of the question.
"You know, he's asked me to work on several records with him and I've very much enjoyed doing it. But he's never suggested that we write together.
"His ex-wife, Jerry Hall, used to say all the time, 'You and Pete should write together'. And we would kind of go, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah'. It may happen and it may not."

Kaiser Chiefs deny mini-LP rumours
With an Australian tour in two months, Leeds rockers Kaiser Chiefs have played down speculation surrounding a new mini-album.
Frontman Ricky Wilson hinted last month that the group were working on a disc of leftover material from the Yours Truly, Angry Mob sessions, but has now said the songs are so bad they'll never see the light of day.
"One night we were left in the studio with just our sound engineer," Wilson revealed. "We had this idea to record an album for 45 minutes off the top of our heads. We just made it up as we went along. It was a laugh to start with and then Simon [the Kaiser's bassist] went and said we wanted to release it. We did in a way… but just as a joke."

Marilyn Manson snubs Eminem over "Stan"
He recently gained Andrew Lloyd Webber's admiration but it seems Eminem's controversial lyrics are too much for shock-rocker Marilyn Manson.
According to an interview in US music mag Spin, Manson turned down a request from Eminem to guest on hit song "Stan", which depicts the murder of the rapper's then-wife, Kim.
"He asked me to sing on his first record, and I would have, except that the song he asked me to sing was… too misogynistic," Manson said.
"It was the one about killing his girlfriend and putting her in a trunk. It was on a record I could listen to, but it was too over-the-top for me to associate with."

Kylie keeps low profile at birthday bash
Aussie pop icon Kylie Minogue celebrated her 39th birthday in style this week, opting for a low-key celebration at home in London with friends and family, including sister Dannii.
Some of the singer's more ardent fans were, however, not going to let the date slip by unnoticed, and left gifts, flowers and cards upon Minogue's doorstep.
"We thought she'd feel a bit down because it was her first birthday since splitting up with Olivier Martinez," one fan told reporters.
Minogue is currently working with DJ/producer Calvin Harris on the follow-up to 2003 LP Body Language.

The Enemy festival scare: "It must have been spiked"
Guitarist for UK trio The Enemy claims he was a victim of drink-spiking at the recent Radio 1 Big Weekend gig in London.
"It was scary. I'd only been drinking booze; it must have been spiked," Hopkins said. "I can't remember any of it but the lads said I was trying to headbutt cars. Apparently I jumped out of the van and headbutted the concrete. Then I was being sick in a corner and they had to call an ambulance. I think I scared them."
The Enemy are currently touring songs from their forthcoming LP – rumoured to be called We'll Live And Die In These Towns --– across the UK, with a trip to Japan planned for August.

George Michael "on drugs", court told
[source: NME.com] George Michael was on a cocktail of drugs when he was arrested in his car last year, a court heard on Wednesday May 29.
The singer admitted to driving while unfit but lawyers argued the condition was down to prescription drugs.
Michael was arrested in October 2006 after motorists reported a driver slumped over the wheel of a Mercedes at traffic lights in north London.
Prosecutor Andrew Torrington told Brent Magistrates Court that tests discovered a therapeutic quantity of an anti-depressant in the singer's system as well as illegal dance drug GHB.
Cannabis was also found in his blood, but the prosecution did not maintain this was the cause of his intoxication, according to BBC News.
Michael's lawyer claimed a sleeping drug was the most likely explanation for his condition. He also told the court it was common for traces of GHB to be found in the blood, even if the drug had not been taken.
District Judge Katherine Marshall agreed the issue at stake was not the drug involved but the condition Michael was in when he was discovered in his car.
Michael has already pleaded guilty to driving while unfit under the influence of drugs, which carries a maximum penalty of six months' jail. Sentencing is due to take place on Friday June 8, one day before the singer is scheduled to perform at the new Wembley Stadium.

Marilyn Manson discusses Columbine
[source: NME.com] Marilyn Manson has discussed the 1999 Columbine tragedy, which saw two teenagers shoot dead 12 fellow students and one teacher before turning the guns on themselves.
At the time, some pointed fingers at Manson because the shooters were said to be fans of his music.
"I always knew that I never felt guilty or that I did something wrong," Manson has now said. "I despised people who accused me of doing that. The whole point of my name was to make a statement about the very same thing I was being blamed for.
"I almost feel cheated if Columbine is talked about and I'm not mentioned because I went through so much bullsh*t and torment, emotionally and personally, and so much concentrated effort to destroy me that I feel I'm being left out when I'm not mentioned.
"No one else can take credit for or take responsibility for what I already got blamed for. I don't wanna take responsibility because I already took it."

UK composer Andrew Lloyd Webber – the man behind Phantom Of The Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar – has announced he'd love to work with Detroit's most famous rapper, Eminem.
"I don't know him well," Webber revealed to British rag Heat, "but I have met him and think he's very intelligent."

"I would think he'd probably want to do his own thing [though]," Webber admitted.

What do you buy the brother who has everything? If you're Liam Gallagher, frontman for Manchester icons Oasis, the sky's the limit.
Gallagher reportedly surprised his songwriting brother Noel with a $260,000 birthday present that will take Noel, 40, into space.
Celebrating Noel's birthday in London, the Gallaghers partied at Nightclub Kitts in London when Liam handed over the extravagant gift.
"It was quite funny when Liam gave Noel the documents," an onlooker was quoted by reporters. "They shared a hug but Liam was soon taking the p*ss out of Noel. He seemed very amused that William Shatner is also going to space."
Unfortunately for Noel, he'll have to wait until 2012 to take the trip on Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipOne.

Rolling Stones inspire poetry from ex-wife
For Jerry Hall – the Texan supermodel currently fronting reality TV show Kept – being married to Sir Mick Jagger was more than just a romantic venture. Hall was married to the Rolling Stones frontman for more than nine years, until their relationship, which spawned four children, ended in 1999.
Now Hall has unveiled poetry inspired by the "Satisfaction" rocker, with the verses of her poem, "Icon", printed in UK newspaper The Independent.
Hall writes: "He is a hollow hyperbole, the crowd plays him like a flute. The crowd lives out their fantasy, through his mirror door they see an image of the person they wish that they could be."

The Police reunite in Vancouver
[source: NME.com] The Police began their reunion tour on Monday in front of 4000 fan-club members with a low-key preview show at Vancouver's GM Place.
Sting, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers are heading out on their first major tour together for 21 years, and will visit the UK in September. But Summers has warned some old favourites may not sound quite the same as fans remember them.
"We've got all these famous songs, but we look at them like new pieces of material," he told the Vancouver Sun. "To a point, we've reworked them, but obviously all the famous riffs are there. You can't play 'Every Breath You Take' without me playing that guitar, obviously.
"We constantly fiddle with them, but because they're alive, they're living, they're not dead. We spent the last two months rearranging and fiddling around until we felt it was good. [There is] some intensity in the songs that may transcend the original recorded versions."

Pet Shop Boys express concerns over Live Earth
Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant is the latest in a long line of stars to question the motives of the Live Earth concerts, which are due to take place on Saturday July 7.
Tennant admitted he's feeling "uneasy" about the concerts, which aim to raise awareness of global warming issues across the world.
"The Princess Diana concert is fair enough, but I feel more uneasy about the Al Gore thing [Live Earth]," Tennant said. "I've always been against the idea of rock stars lecturing people as if we know something [other people] don't. It looks arrogant. It's not as if we have a private source of information. To state the obvious as if you are the only person that knows it is intellectually weak."
Tennant also slammed U2 frontman Bono for his methods of charity work. "Bono uses his celebrity, but in doing so he increases his celebrity. I'm never even totally convinced that the rest of U2 feel comfortable with that."

Barbra Streisand forced to cancel Rome concert
With a month of concerts scheduled for Switzerland, Austria, France, Ireland and Britain, US singer Barbra Streisand has cancelled the opening show of her European tour, which was to be held in Rome on Saturday June 15.
The move is being claimed as a triumphant win by Italian consumer groups, who've been protesting about what they claim are "excessively high ticket prices".
Despite claims by the promoter that the gig was scrapped due to "unexpected production delays", the protestors labelled tickets – ranging from AU$244 to $1,465 – as "absurd and shameful".
"The stadium is public property and cannot be used for immoral deals that are shameful to a civilised country," the groups Codacons and Adusbef said in a statement.

Courtney Love slams Dr Martens' Cobain advertisement
Courtney Love has slammed a new UK advertising campaign by shoemaker Dr Martens. The commercial appears to cash in on the death of several famous rock stars, including Nirvana singer and Love's late husband, Kurt Cobain.
The campaign portrays the stars – which also include Joey Ramone, Sid Vicious and Joe Strummer – as angels, all wearing the famous boots in heaven.
"Courtney had no idea this was taking place and would never have approved such a use," her publicist told US magazine People.
"She thinks it's outrageous that a company is allowed to commercially gain from such a despicable use of her husband's picture. It does appear that in the UK what Dr Martens has done is allowed. Courtney did not, and would not, approve of such a use of Kurt's name and likeness."

Cream to reunite?
British rockers Cream, who shot to fame in the 60s with hits such as "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Strange Brew" and "I Feel Free", may be reuniting for a tour.
Cream were one of the defining UK groups of that era and their success helped kickstart the career of ace guitarist Eric Clapton.
Now, according to bassist Jack Bruce, the trio (rounded out by drummer Ginger Baker) are set to play shows in late 2007, following years of acrimony between the band.
It'll be the group's first live performances since 2005, when they got together after a 37-year break for a series of concerts in the US and UK that left members seething.

Keith Richards says Pirates is like an "acid trip"
Veteran bad-boy and Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards told journalists he felt like he was on drugs as he stepped onto the red carpet for the Disneyland premiere of Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End.
"I feel like I'm on a flashback acid trip," Richards quipped. "Disneyland is all about the imagination, and that sort of psychedelia can go in any direction, can't it? It can be quite dark, and it can be quite light and perfect here at the happiest place on Earth with the giant mice."
It's believed Richards' bizarre behaviour inspired Johnny Depp's portrayal of lead character Captain Jack Sparrow. Richards has a cameo role in the latest film.

Klaxons discuss NME cover shoot
[source: NME.com] Klaxons have revealed they were at risk of lions attacking during a recent photo shoot in the Californian desert.
Speaking to NME.com, James Righton said the band were taken to a ranch with CSS and educated on how to react to an approaching lion.
"Me and Jamie were quite drunk when the shoot occurred so our recollections are pretty misty. We got taken to this ranch and there was this big sign, saying, 'Beware: lions may attack'. And another, saying, 'If you come face to face with a lion, act like you're not scared by it. And if there's a small child by your side, place them on your shoulders'."
Jamie Reynolds says there was evidence all around them of possible danger:
"There were loads of paw prints in the sand."

Noel Gallagher makes up with Scissor Sisters
[source: NME.com] Noel Gallagher has made up with Scissor Sisters after a backstage meeting with the group's singer, Ana Matronic.
Oasis guitarist Gallagher once said the band's music was for "squares", but when Matronic saw her adversary at the BRIT Awards earlier this year, she turned on the charm.
"We share the same security company, so when I heard they were hanging out backstage I marched straight up to Noel, pinched him on the cheek and gave him a big hug," Matronic told Metro. "If someone says something bad about Scissor Sisters I don't engage them in an argument but try to kill them with kindness and make them love me. Noel referred to me as a 'top bird' to a mutual acquaintance."
Matronic also revealed she bonded with Sir Paul McCartney when the band played Live8 in July 2005.
"I saw him walk by and thought: 'Now's my chance', and said: 'Excuse me, Sir Paul, could I…?'. Before I could ask, he asked me for my autograph. He was collecting them on his programme for his grandson, I think. It was mind-blowing for a Beatle to be asking me for my autograph."

The Who frontman attacks Live Earth gigs
[source: NME.com] The Who frontman Roger Daltrey has slammed the upcoming Live Earth concerts.
The concerts being organised by former US vice-president Al Gore will take place in cities across the globe on Saturday July 7 and feature the likes of Madonna and Foo Fighters.
However, Daltrey believes the shows are undermining their own aims of raising awareness about climate change.
"The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert," he told The Sun. "I can't believe it. Let's burn even more fuel. We have problems with global warming, but the questions and the answers are so huge I don't know what a rock concert is ever going to do to help."
However, The Who frontman – who claimed the gigs are pointless as most of the planet are already aware of global warming issues – did offer a novel solution to the world's environmental woes.
"My answer is to burn all the oil as quick as possible and then the politicians will have to find a solution," he declared.
The worldwide shows have also being criticised by Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof, however Daltrey was also critical of that event, even though his band played the London leg.
"What did we really achieve at Live 8? We got loads of platitudes and no action. Who were we kidding?" he asked. "At least with [original event] Live Aid, Bob Geldof was willing to work the trenches and they did save a lot of lives. We could see what we achieved at the end of it."

Syd Barrett leaves £1.7m in will
[source: NME.com] Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett has left nearly £1.7million (AU$4 m) in his will.
Many believed the songwriter, who died last year, was poor because of the modest, reclusive lifestyle he led in Cambridge after quitting the band in 1968. But Barrett left brother Alan £425,000 ($1m) and his other siblings – Rosemary Breen, Ruth Brown and Donald Barrett – £275,000 ($658,000) each, according to documents that were made public this week.
Breen, who cared for the singer towards the end of his life, also received the proceeds from the sale of his Cambridge house – £310,000 ($742,000) – and the £119,000 ($285,000) made from auctioning his possessions.
The legal papers also indicated Barrett's mental state had declined in recent years. Brother Alan authorised the will under the Mental Health Act, The Daily Mail reported.
Barrett was a founding member and main songwriter of Pink Floyd before he left the band. He then released two solo albums in 1970.
However, he suffered psychological problems believed to be linked to experimentation with LSD and eventually retreated from public view, living the rest of his life in Cambridge.
He died last year, aged 60, from complications arising from diabetes.

Marilyn Manson says marriage left him "a featherless bird"
With new LP Eat Me, Drink Me due for release next month, US shock rocker Marilyn Manson says he was devastated after his marriage to burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese broke down.
"I was completely destroyed. I had no soul left," the 38-year-old rocker told Spin. "I define myself as a person, a human, an artist, as someone who makes things – writing, painting, music – and I couldn't do anything." Manson married in November 2005 after five years with Von Teese, who filed for divorce last December.
"She said she had tolerated the lifestyle because she hoped I would change and threatened to leave if I didn't," Manson said. "I was sleeping on the couch in my own home. I was no longer supposed to be a rock star. I was someone who had to be apologised for. I wasn't prepared to be alone. I came out of this naked, a featherless bird."
Manson is now dating 19-year-old actress Evan Rachel Wood.

Ike Turner spends a night in the slammer
US performer Ike Turner – the former husband of singer Tina Turner – has spent the night in jail, after being arrested in California for an outstanding 1989 narcotics warrant.
The 75-year-old musician was pulled over after police saw his silver Mercedes driving erratically across lanes in the San Fernando Valley on Tuesday May 15.
Officer April Harding said they discovered the outstanding warrant during a routine check and booked him into a downtown hotel.
"He had court yesterday and I guess they deemed it was an old warrant that was never removed from the system," Harding revealed.
Turner was released the following day. The legendary producer is rumoured to be working on a new LP for Ohio duo Black Keys.

Blue King Brown score YouTube top spot
Melbourne-based roots collective Blue King Brown have landed a coup, with the clip for land rights single "Water" (which they filmed for AU$200 in a Melbourne warehouse) finding its way onto the front page of global video site YouTube.
Landing the spot guarantees BKB exposure to thousands, if not millions, of potential viewers.
"What can you say? This sort of stuff doesn't come around very often. You can't take it for granted. It's a blessing. Exposure like that is huge," bassist/manager Carlo Santone told Sydney Morning Herald.
The last Aussie band to be featured on YouTube's home-page – rockers Sick Puppies – saw their "Free Hugs" clip viewed a staggering 14 million times, with mentions on US TV shows like Letterman and Oprah.
"It is a very special song for us," Santone said of "Water".
"Essentially it's a land rights song… it can relate to so many people around the world. That's what Blue King Brown are about: spreading messages about unity and positive change and respect for the struggles that the people are facing."

"It's all a bit unreal," Flowers admitted this week.
"I grew up worshipping U2. These days, I hang around in bars with the band and Bono invites me backstage to sing with him. I also get to hang out with Elton John. I'm such a fan that it's hard not to act like a teenage girl in his company."

Marilyn Manson in video controversy
[source: NME.com] Marilyn Manson is courting controversy after his video for new single "Heart-Shaped Glasses (When The Heart Guides The Hand)" appears to feature the singer having real sex with girlfriend Rachel Even Wood.
A source told Radar magazine the couple didn't fake the scene.
"Let's just say there were some conservative people involved [with the video] that got a little upset about things that were taking place. There have been rumours back and forth, but I will not confirm nor deny them," Manson said.
The sex scene depicts Manson and Wood violently kissing while writhing around locked in a passionate embrace, making purposeful love. In another scene, Wood seductively massages her nether regions while watching Manson's onstage performance.
The singer told MTV: " I think it's one of those 'buyer beware' situations. You can't be mad at me when you know what you're asking for."

Bob Dylan talks of Beatles friendship
[source: NME.com] Bob Dylan has spoken in depth about his longstanding friendship with The Beatles and his particular bond with George Harrison.
Talking to Rolling Stone magazine, Dylan talked freely about Harrison's struggle to find his voice in a group that contained John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
"George got stuck with being the Beatle that had to fight to get songs on records because of Lennon and McCartney. Well, who wouldn't get stuck?" Dylan said.
"If George had had his own group and was writing his own songs back then, he'd have been just as big as anybody."
Speaking against popular belief, the singer also denounced any rumours of competitiveness between himself and Lennon and McCartney.
"They were fantastic singers," Dylan said. "To this day, it's hard to find a better singer than Lennon was, or than McCartney was and still is."
Tipping his cap to McCartney in particular, Dylan admitted he was in awe of the artist.
"He's about the only one that I am in awe of. He can do it all. And he's never let up... He's just so damn effortless."

Angels & Airwaves bassist kicked out of band
[source: NME.com] Angels And Airwaves bassist Ryan Sinn has been told to pack his bags.
Writing on fansite thearmyofangels.com, Sinn wrote said he was kicked out over the phone on April 19.
"I could go into an entire novel about my opinions on the whole matter and why I was given the axe, but throwing dirt just seems desperate.
"All I'll say is the reasons I were given weren't at all honest. They were severely hypocritical."
The band are currently working on the follow-up to 2006 debut album We Don't Need To Whisper. Rumours suggest Matt Wachter, a former member of 30 Seconds To Mars, will replace Sinn.

Kelly Clarkson defends new LP
Former American Idol singer Kelly Clarkson has responded to reports that claim she's clashing with Clive Davis, the CEO of her label, RCA Records.
Clarkson's latest album, My December, is her third LP since she won TV's biggest talent competition. But the singer has reportedly been fighting with Davis after he openly criticised the new recording.
"There's always this battle, and it's not a bad battle to have," Clarkson explained in an interview last week.
"I mean, you obviously don't want 'yes' people all around you. And, obviously, [Davis] and others at the label have been in the business far longer than I have. So you obviously take their opinions in."
My December is due out in July, with Clarkson gearing up for a 40-date US and Canadian tour that will run until September.

"The only thing I wanted to do was cut a record as good as Keith Whitley, and I listened to that music over and over again."
Also honoured on the night were American Idol winner Carrie Underwood, Texan duo Brooks & Dunn and Bill Anderson (better known as Whisperin' Bill).

Bono blasts G-8 Africa aid shortcomings
[source: NME.com] Bono has criticised a recent G-8 progress report as a 'cold shower', according to reports earlier this week.
The U2 frontman has called on German Chancellor Angela Merkel to address the shortcomings at a G-8 summit next month and maintain the promise made to double African aid to US$50 billion by 2010.
"The G-8 are sleepwalking into a crisis of credibility. I know the DATA report will feel like a cold shower, but I hope it will wake us all up," the singer said.
A report from DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) shows aid was increased by $2.3 billion, significantly less than the amount needed. It said Britain and Japan have been the most generous countries so far.
According to Associated Press, Bono told reporters: "These statistics are not just numbers on a page. They are people begging for their lives, for two pills a day, a mother begging to immunise her children, a child begging not to become a mother at the age of 12."
The 33rd G-8 Summit will be held next month in Heiligendamm, Germany.

NIN frontman hits out at record label
[source: NME.com] Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has blasted his record label, Universal Music Group, for the high pricing of his band's latest album, Year Zero.
In a posting on the band's website, Reznor called the pricing "absurd" and accused the label of ripping off fans.
"As the climate grows more and more desperate for record labels, their answer to their mostly self-inflicted wounds seems to be to screw the consumer over even more," Reznor wrote.
As an example, Reznor cited the "absurd" retail pricing of Year Zero in Australia.
"Shame on you, UMG. Year Zero is selling for $34.99 Australian dollars ($29.10 US). No wonder people steal music. Avril Lavigne's record in the same store was $21.99 ($18.21 US).
"When I asked a label rep about this, his response was: 'It's because we know you have a real core audience that will pay whatever it costs when you put something out – you know, true fans. It's the pop stuff we have to discount to get people to buy'. So, I guess as a reward for being a 'true fan' you get ripped off."
He concluded by saying Nine Inch Nails are planning to release a full-length remix collection, with details to come soon.

Lollapalooza goes global?
[source: NME.com] Legendary US rock festival Lollapalooza may go global within the next decade.
Festival founder Perry Farrell, who fronted alternative rockers Jane's Addiction and now heads Satellite Party, expressed the desire to take the festival to the world.
"I want to put together an event around the world in the next ten years that will refashion, redress and transform. It's something I'm looking into now and, if it happens, it will happen quick. That's my ambition," Farrell told MTV.
Lollapalooza travelled across the United States in the 1990s but currently stays put in one location for three days.
This year's festival will take place from August 3 to August 5 in Chicago's Grant Park. Headliners include Interpol, Muse, Modest Mouse, Daft Punk and Kings of Leon.

Franz Ferdinand star comments on Cribs collaboration
[source: NME.com] Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos has revealed what it was like to produce The Cribs' new album, Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever.
Posting on www.franzferdinand.co.uk, Kapranos wrote: "I was asked by the Jarmans to produce this record, so [I] stayed with them in Wakefield, going through the songs at their rawest, until we were ready to go to Vancouver where we recorded.
"A band like this is fun to produce because they don't rely on tedious studio tricks to sound good; it was all about songs and performance.
"We met up with Lee Ranaldo [Sonic Youth] in New York after Christmas for the song 'Be Safe' and [it was] one of the most spine-tingling studio moments I can remember – the band playing, Gary singing and Lee improvising, all completely live. However, the highlight of the recording was back in Vancouver for Ryan's 'face melting' guitar solo, which involved a litre of wine, a somersault and a snapped neck on his favourite guitar."

Madonna to record special Live Earth song
[source: NME.com] Madonna has recorded a special song for Live Earth.
The tune, "Hey You", will only be available for download to benefit the global concert, which takes place across seven continents throughout Saturday July 7.
Fansite Drownedmadonna.com reported the song is about "making a difference, loving yourself and others".
"It is a simple song, not at all like Confessions," the website claimed. "You can call it a mid-tempo beat."
Madonna will perform at the London leg of the concerts, which will take place at Wembley Stadium. Beastie Boys, Genesis, Foo Fighters and Razorlight are all set to perform in the UK capital.

Bob Geldof lays into Live Earth
Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof has criticised the involvement of former US presidential candidate Al Gore in the forthcoming Live Earth concerts.
In an interview with German newspaper De Volkskrant, Geldof said the global warming gigs lack a direct focus.
"I hope they're a success," Geldof said, "but why is [Gore] actually organising them? To make us aware of the greenhouse effect? Everybody's known about that problem for years. We are all f**cking conscious of global warming."
The Live Earth concerts will take place on Saturday July 7.
"I would only organise [Live Earth] if I could go onstage and announce concrete environmental measures from the American presidential candidates, Congress or major corporations," he told the newspaper.
"They haven't got those guarantees, so it's just an enormous pop concert or the umpteenth time that Madonna or Coldplay get up onstage."
In Australia, the Live Earth spectacular will feature an array of acts, including Crowded House, Jack Johnson, Wolfmother, John Butler Trio, Missy Higgins, Eskimo Joe, Sneaky Sound System, Paul Kelly, Ghostwriters, Toni Collette & The Finish and Blue King Brown.

"I am so excited to share with you guys that I've adopted a little boy," Crow announced on her website. "He was born two weeks ago. [His name] is Wyatt (after my dad) Steven (after my little brother and Scooter) and we are enjoying some very private family time."
It's baby number one for the singer, who celebrated her 45th birthday recently. Crow is currently single and writing tracks for the follow-up to her most recent LP, 2005's Wildflower.

Robbie gives American women the flick
Now residing in Los Angeles after escaping the cold English winters, Robbie Williams has revealed he's well and truly over the women of his adopted homeland.
According to a furious rant on the singer's website, it was dating a woman named Tina that's put him off his game.
"There are a few dating rules people adhere to out here in Hollywood," the 33-year-old singer, who spent the beginning of 2007 in rehab, wrote. "And they're all stupid: don't call until the next day, then don't get back to him for at least two days… It's all rubbish. If any of the rules are applied to me, I respond in kind by never speaking to them again."

Ride return
One of Britain's most influential shoegazing bands, Ride, are set to reform, after Andy Bell – Ride's former frontman and current bassist with Manchester rockers Oasis – hinted at a possible reunion this winter. Together with Mark Gardener, Bell was the main songwriter behind the group, who shot to fame in 1990 with tracks like "Sennen" and "Vapour Trail". Ride split in 1996, but are now heavily rumoured to be performing at Canada's North By Northeast Music and Film Festival in June. Bell is refusing to comment on the rumours.
