Franz Ferdinand to release new track
[source: NME.com] Franz Ferdinand will release a new song as part of a unique project featuring a host of other bands.
Hot Chip, David Byrne, Deerhoof and TV On The Radio are also among bands who have written songs using original lyrics by Scottish artist David Shrigley.
Shrigley, who painted the artwork for Deerhoof's Friend Opportunity album, published a selection of his lyrics for an unmade pop album in 2006, titled Worried Noodles, which have now been used to write the songs.
A double CD release, Worried Noodles features the original lyrics and artwork, as well as 39 tracks created from the texts. It's set for release on Tuesday 23 October, while a launch show will take place at London Scala on Sunday 14 October, with all proceeds going to Amnesty International.

RATM frontman finishes solo album
[source: NME.com] Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack De La Rocha has finally completed his debut solo album… seven years after work began on the disc.
De La Rocha collaborated closely with The Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore, and Billboard.com quotes a source saying it sounds like "Led Zeppelin meets Dr. Dre."
Since leaving the band in 2000, De La Rocha has worked with several artists, including DJ Shadow and Trent Reznor, but it is not known if these artists feature on the album.
The report also reveals that some of the album was recorded at an eco-friendly studio in Los Angeles, owned by Jack Johnson.
Since De La Rocha is currently unsigned, a release date is unconfirmed.

Dave Grohl slams Paris Hilton
[source: NME.com] Fresh from unveiling his contempt for Courtney Love, Dave Grohl has now criticised party girl Paris Hilton, labelling her "a total raging, disgusting, rich, lazy party sl*t".
The Foo Fighters frontman also told The Sun newspaper the heiress is "f***ing lame".
Grohl and Hilton reportedly fell out after meeting in a restaurant years ago, with the singer claiming the heiress put on "the full princess attitude with the nose in the air".
Consequently, he concluded: "I pray that my daughter will not turn out like her."

Britney could lose custody of kids
[source: NME.com] New reports claim Britney Spears is about to lose temporary custody of her children.
The latest allegation of improper behaviour comes from former bodyguard Tony Barretto, who's accused the singer of developing "nudity, drug and safety" issues after leaving rehab in March.
Barretto began working for Spears after her rehab treatment but said he was fired on Thursday 17 May after he failed to hear her order to "pick up her hat".
The news comes at the end of a bizarre seven days, which have seen both the star's lawyer and new management team bail out on her.
Lawyer Laura Wasser abandoned the Spears ship and even her new management team, The Firm, withdrew their services.
In a statement issued by the company, they declared: "It saddens us to confirm media reports that we have terminated our professional relationship with Britney Spears, but current circumstances have prevented us from properly doing our job. We wish Britney the best."
According to reports in the US, authorities will now force Britney to hand custody of two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James to their father, Kevin Federline.

Barbra Streisand to snub Oz?
Early reports suggest US superstar Barbra Streisand will visit New Zealand next year but bypass Australia.
According to sources within Streisand's booking agency, the singer is still upset over the criticism she received while touring Australia more than seven years ago. Then, on her Timeless tour, the singer used an autocue, only to be heckled by fans.
"She felt misunderstood and her efforts to reach out to audiences were not fully appreciated," a source said, however tour promoter Andrew McManus said "nothing is definite".
"She wants to play markets she did not perform on her last tour," McManus claimed. "So it's New Zealand this time and not Australia."

Sweet Home Alabama…
"Sweet Home Alabama" is already one of the most recognised rock songs from the 70s, but now Lynyrd Skynyrd's hit will be used by state tourism authorities in the US to entice visitors to the area.
According to State Tourism Director Lee Sentell, the song's title will be used in a AU$5.4 million marketing programme in 2008. Expect to see T-shirts, bandanas and caps all wearing the slogan in a move that will earn the band approximately AU$25,000 in royalties.
There aren't, however, any plans to use the actual song in the campaign.

Rage Against The Machine to tour Australia
It's been almost ten years since their last visit but reformed LA outfit Rage Against The Machine will return to Australia in January.
The band – comprising vocalist Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello, drummer Brad Wilk and bassist Tim Commerford – are sure-fire additions to the 2008 Big Day Out and have revealed they'll play two side-shows, in Sydney and Melbourne.
"Is it coincidence that in the seven years Rage Against the Machine has been away America has slid into right-wing purgatory? I think not," Tom Morello told MTV earlier in 2007.
"It occurred to all of us that the time was right to see if we can knock the Bush administration out in one fell swoop, and we hope to do that job well. There is no action without reaction and we're part of that reaction."
Tickets for the gigs go on sale Thursday 27 September.
Side-show dates:
Tuesday 22 January – Sydney Entertainment Centre
Wednesday 30 January – Festival Hall, Melbourne

Controversial Diddy commercial online
It's been banned from television in the US, but that hasn't stopped hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs from airing his controversial TV commercial for new fragrance Unforgivable Woman.
Fans of the "Come To Me" star can now check out the raunchy ads ads on Diddy's MySpace page.
"I feel strongly that this movie needs to be viewed and judged by the public rather than by executives," he said in a statement yesterday.
"Some people may be uncomfortable with the sensuality and sexual content, but it is important for them to make that decision personally. Since we launched the Sean John brand ten years ago, we have taken chances and done many non-traditional things. This three-minute movie is no different and will revolutionise the way people view fragrances forever."
